Stella has written eleven novels, published by Virago, Sceptre and Serpent’s Tail, over thirty short stories, seven plays, radio stories, and many features and reviews. Her story Martha Grace won the CWA Short Story Award in 2002, and her novels State of Happiness and The Room of Lost Things have both been long-listed for the Orange Prize. She has adapted State of Happiness for a feature film with Fiesta Productions. Her play A Guest on Other People’s Ground will tour with Fireraisers in 2009. In addition to her writing work she is a performer (Improbable, Spontaneous Combustion, guest with the Comedy Store Players) and has more recently begun directing theatre (Shaky Isles, National Youth Theatre, BAC).
Stella was born in the UK, grew up in New Zealand, and now lives in London.
