Eloquent Protest III - Kathmandu
12th November. 12 noon and 5pm

In addition to this year’s London production, a separate version of ELOQUENT PROTEST has been selected as the UK entry to open the Kathmandu International Theatre Festival on 12 November. Three of the London cast, Will Strange, Ben Mellor and Anette Reis-Dunne will be joining director Hazel Roy to perform this event in Nepal. “In a country which has just survived its own civil war, this production should be particularly apt,” says Hazel.

The Kathmandu Festival is being hosted by Aarohan Theatre Company - one of the leading centres for theatre in Nepal who have organised a number of International festivals.  Nineteen companies from 15 different countries will take part. As well as Eloquent Protest, the UK contribution, companies from USA, Norway, Denmark, Bangladesh, India, Poland, Pakistan, Russia, Iran, Thailand and Nepal are among those represented. 5,000 festival brochures are being produced and distributed throughout Kathmandu and the festival offers brilliant opportunities for international networking.

Students from Gurukul, Aarohan’s residential 2 year training school are centrally involved in the organisation of the event. Seven of these students visited the UK this August to take part in the 'Contacting the World' Festival of International Youth Theatre in Liverpool, a link established by Hazel Roy between Gurukul and Contact Theatre Manchester who organised the event.

AGNI KO KATHA - Fire in the Monastery- Aarohan Theatre Group

Gurukul students are given a unique training in Newari classical, contemporary and classic Western theatre as well as a training in Katchahari theatre (an adaptation of Augusto Boals Forum Theatre). They represent a cross section of Nepali society with poor students given free scholarships to train with the company.

AROHAN have been in the forefront of progressive movements in Nepal and in the struggle for a return to democracy. They are a company always developing and breaking new boundaries - an exciting organisation to work with. The company also publish many theatre texts in Nepali and English and work closely with leading Nepali playwrights like Abhi Subedi, and the classical musicians Sukarma.

Sukarma appeared in Manchester this summer at the UK Nepalese Festival co-ordinated by Hazel as part of an intensive European tour. We hope they will join us as special guests for EP3 along with Haushala Thapa, who appeared in Rivers of Shame in 2002, a production about child labour commissioned by the International Labour Organisation and Co-directed by Sunil Pokharel Artistic Director of Aarohan Theatre and Hazel Roy. Read about the project in Hazels book (below).
